# Matlab/OSX

Now that Apple is turning the screws and no longer allowing you to boot from
OS9, I decided to take another shot at installing and actually using the OSX
matlab.
I'm happy to report that it's not quite so formidable as it had seemed last
summer when it was intially released. Thanks to several people, notably John
Vokey and a unix-hacker graduate student here, Iris Zemach, installation was
completed in about a half hour. With relatively minimal hassle I got some of my
fairly complex programs up and going. Things seemed easier when it suddenly
dawned on me (duh) that a lot of useful non-SCREEN Psychophysics toolbox
routines would continue to work just fine with the new matlab.
So I'm joining the (seemingly still kind of small) chorus urging you to start
using the new matlab now rather than waiting for the Math Works to issue a more
user-friendly version. Needless to say, the more people do so, the easier it
will be to exchange questions, ideas, and advice.
And critically of course...is there any new anticipated date for release of the
new Psychophysics Toolbox?

Hello All,
I want to extract information(feature) from an
image.This features like speed, distance between two
object, angle etc.
How can I do that? Actually I need a tool or
programing code to do that.

Which Xwindows server did you use? I've installed with Oroboris, but haven't
been entirely happy with it; I'd like to move to Apple's (which I had installed
prior to getting the new Matlab, & was very happy with, but uninstalled in
order to use Matlab's supported server).

Dear Geoff,
An alpha version of the OS X Psychtoolbox is available on the
Psychtoolbox web site here:
[http://www.psychtoolbox.org/osx.html](http://www.psychtoolbox.org/osx.html)
As that page states, this is a "preview" release. It is not yet ready
for serious use. It is a good foundation and I am working to fill in
the missing parts ASAP. We have not yet announced a release date for
version 1.0.

I've been using Apple's X11 with Matlab 6.5 with no problems for a couple
of months now. I'd recommend it, it lacks the quirks of Oroboris and seems
to have better performance (important on a G3 Graphite iMac). Moving to
the new beta (version 4) has not caused any problems either.
