I'm going to perform a series of gaze contingent experiments using an
ISCAN camera system. The system is hooked via a serial connection to a
computer running Matlab and PsychToolbox, which will handle stimulus
control and analysis of data. The experiments, however, are dependent
on fast communication between the computers and speedy analysis, since
saccades occur on the order of milliseconds. It seems that it takes
Matlab around 20 milliseconds to even read data from the serial port
(let alone the time it takes to execute any actual analysis), which is
way too slow. Is there any way to speed this process up, or any
recommendations you may have from your own experiences in the past?
