Does installation of basic PTB requires any advanced MATLAB toolboxes?

No. Also it doesn't even require Matlab. It also works fine for almost all purposes with the free GNU/Octave (https://www.gnu.org/software/octave/) which is very easy to install on Linux or Windows, a bit more work on OSX.

Did run the brew upgrade and was told i am allready up to date.  
Also, as pointed out I get the exact same issues when I install octave over Macports. in fact the two verison look and behave identically.
