Control of Parallel Port; Cogent2000

To all,

I am planning to control an electric stimulator (Digitimer D180; Trigger:
positive TTL pulses; Output: single, very brief (50-100µs), high-voltage
pulses) and a box containing 4 relays (which direct the electric pulses of
the stimulator to 4 electrodes) by using Matlab installed on a PC under
Win95. The electrodes are connected to the tested persons that shall answer
by typing specified commands on the keyboard of the PC.

In message No. 943, Dr. Ingling suggests for example the use of Cogent2000
in order to control digital I/O from within
MATLAB(http://www.fil.ion.ucl.ac.uk/cogent2000/current.html).
I would like to work with Cogent2000. However, I have been told that
Cogent2000 can address the parallel port of a PC only as a whole, whereas I
have to control the electrical devices via single pins of the parallel port
of my PC.

Does anybody know if it is possible to address the stimulator on the one
hand and the relay box on the other via the parallel port with Cogent2000
anyway, so that the timing and coordination of both devices is guaranteed?

Would it be better to buy the MATLAB data acquisiton toolbox instead?

Or has anybody written MATLAB extensions (for Windows) for controlling NI
IO-cards, so that I could address single pins of the parallel port?

Thank you all very much for your help
Martin
