Psychtoolbox 2.5 for Mac & Win!

Dear Psychtoolbox User

We are happy to announce the release of Psychtoolbox 2.5, for both
Mac and Win platforms. Download here:

As always, the Psychtoolbox is a free set of extensions to the MATLAB
programming environment to provide you with control over
your hardware to produce research-grade stimuli and experiments. The
Psychtoolbox has been available for Mac since 1995 and for Win since
2000. It's been downloaded about 4,000 times, and has an active
forum, with several messages a day. 53 papers cite it.

This release brings the Win version much closer to parity with the
Mac version, with all important features present, including SCREEN
and PSYCHSERIAL, etc. Some of you did some research with the earlier
alpha release, and, thanks in part to the efforts of these pioneers,
we anticipate that most people will find this new beta release ready
to put to work

The Mac version is also improved. The new LoadClut makes it
easy to load the CLUT in all graphics cards, especially the new crop
of graphics cards with 10-bit DACs, e.g. the $130 ATI Radeon 7000,
and the pricier 14-bit DAC interface from CRS Ltd.
We have rationalized the always difficult process of low-level
customization to accommodate the idiosyncrasies of new graphics
drivers, to maintain a consistent high-level MATLAB interface that
allows you to reliably synch to the display blanking. ScreenTest has
advanced a generation, doing a large multi-parameter test and
reporting the results, compactly in English. All the driver-specific
customization is now done in one user-accessible file, OpenScreen.m,
using new SCREEN Preference values, so users can immediately make any
necessary changes to accommodate a new graphics driver. We anticipate
frequent updates to OpenScreen.m, incorporating everyone's knowledge
about the best settings for each graphics card. Fifty enhancements,
including runtime selection of screen spatial and temporal
resolution, are described at the web site:

Allen is hard at work creating the next generation, internally
rewritten to be based on OpenGL, to achieve better performance and
platform independence. This new version of the Psychtoolbox will
support Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux. A preliminary version
may be available as soon as August.
