How to restore Windows2000 icons

In Windows 2000, when the Psychtoolbox changes the screen bit depth
using the pixelSize argument to SCREENOpenWindow and then your script
crashes and you force exit from Matlab, then sometimes the Windows
file icons can get messed up; All black icons or generic icons
replace the usual icons.

My advice is to avoid that problem by setting the pixel size using
Windows' "Display" control panel instead of the Psychtoolbox's
pixelSize arguement to SCREEN'OpenWindow', and particularly as you
develop scripts.

However, when the problem strikes, this is the ritual which I use to
restore the right icons:

1 - Under "My Computer" on the desktop find the storage device which
has Windows installed on it. (If your system has only one hard drive
and one partitition on that drive, then that storage device will be
your hard drive.)

2- Right-click on that storage device icon and from the pop-up menu
which appears left-click on "properties".

3- Select the "Tools" tab on the window which appears.

4- On this "Tools" page click the "Check Now" button.

5- Another window appears. Select checkboxes in that window for
both items "Automatically fix file system errors" and "Scan for and
attempt recovery of bad sectors".

6 -Click the start button on that same window. Windows will want to
reboot itself to run the file system checks and repairs on startup.
Let it do that.

7- After Windows reboots right-click anywhere on the desktop except on
an icon and select "Properties" from the pop-up menu which appears.

8- In the "Display Properties" window which appears select the
"Settings" tab. Using the "Colors" drop-down menu select some other
setting than the current one. Click on the "Apply" button. Windows
will ask if you want to stick with the current settings. If you can
see that question, tell it yes.

9- Repeat the previous step but restore the bit depth to the original
setting.

10- Repeat steps 8 & 9 for each display connected to the system.

I've also had luck restoring my icons by running virus scans with
Norton Antivirus. I have my system set to do a full scan every
weekend (scanning every file), and every Monday morning my icons have
all been refreshed.
