Hi,

I would open your .smat file from R2008a as a text file in a text
editor, copy the text, and paste it in as a shell script to be executed
from an AppleScript. If you save your script as an application, you can
add that to the Dock.

FWIW, everything that StartMATLAB did can be done without it; there is
no magic here, StartMATLAB was simply packaging up what you can already
assemble on your own. We will look into re-enabling it in a future
release, once we learn from our mistakes on how to assemble it.
