question about licenses

This seems to be an easy question, but I cant find the answer to it anywhere.

If I want to run say, 4 subjects at a time, do I need to buy 4 licenses of Matlab for $500+
each, plus another license for developing the experiments?

Please let me know how you have solved this issue.
