Sync check fails on first run only

Hi all,

I have a task that runs in PTB on an HP Probook. The task passes synchronization checks when I run it on the computer itself, and when we attach it to a standard projector in our lab. However, when running the task at our local MRI scanning center, we observe odd behavior. When I attach the laptop to scan center projector, the task fails the synchronization check and terminates. If I make no changes at all and simply press run in matlab again, the task runs fine (no errors are printed in the console, no red/yellow triangle before the task).

My questions:

  1. Is the machine actually passing synchronization checks on the second run? If so, why would it fail on the first?
  2. We have been unable to get the task to pass synchronization checks on the first run despite trying multiple machines with different graphics cards and altering the screen resolution. The only time it ever fails it when connected to the scanning center projector, on the first run only. We have limited access to troubleshoot on that projector and cannot otherwise reproduce the error away from the scan center. In that case, do folks here have opinions on how big of a problem disabling sync checks would pose for fMRI analysis?

of Psychtoolbox to the vertical retrace (VBL) is not working on your setup.

This will seriously impair proper stimulus presentation and stimulus presentation timing!
Please read ‘help SyncTrouble’ for information about how to solve or work-around the problem.
You can force Psychtoolbox to continue, despite the severe problems, by adding the command
Screen(‘Preference’, ‘SkipSyncTests’, 1); at the top of your script, if you really know what you are doing.
